A Growth Mindset

I read the blog about a growth mindset and its relation to "ungrading". The idea of grading diminishes growth and in my eyes promotes a sense of fear within students as they work on their course work. This is because they are punished for mistakes, especially on mistakes that may not even be relevant to the assignment at hand such as spelling. When students hyper- focus on grades they lose sight of the assignment and their growth in learning. I also think this can get in the way of the professor as well because their focus is taken away from giving helpful and insightful feedback and instead on catching mistakes and taking away points. The idea of ungrading puts the creative freedom and implements growth within the students as they are able to focus back on gaining knowledge and less on if they placed the comma in the right spot and if they will be docked points for that. I think that deadlines and time frames are good as well because this does signify that there can be loss of points, but that the loss of points is not on the work of the students, but the lack of effort they have put in by choosing to not turn anything in at all.
